LNG Canada to Appoint New President and CEO Starting April 2025

LNG Canada Appoints Chris Cooper as New President & CEO, Effective April 2025

VANCOUVER, BC, December 16, 2025 — LNG Canada has announced that Chris Cooper, currently Senior Vice President for Phase 1 Pipeline and Expansion, will succeed Jason Klein as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2025.

Cooper brings more than 35 years of experience in the energy sector, having held various leadership positions in Shell since joining the company in 1998. His career spans the Upstream, Downstream, and LNG sectors, and he has developed a reputation for navigating complex projects, managing assets, and fostering strong commercial and stakeholder relationships.

Cooper was seconded to LNG Canada from Shell in 2021 to lead the reset and completion of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in close partnership with TC Energy. In parallel, he played a key role in advancing the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Cedar LNG in 2024 and led LNG Canada’s Phase 2 development. Prior to joining LNG Canada, Cooper served as Venture Director for Oman Gas and Development Director for Shell’s Nigeria LNG Train 7, where he successfully led initiatives to develop investment-grade business solutions.

“I’m pleased to continue the journey with all those involved in and around the LNG Canada investment,” said Cooper. “Together, we are setting the benchmark for economically, environmentally, and socially responsible large-scale LNG production in Canada and creating a positive and lasting legacy with First Nations, the local community, and for British Columbia and Canada.”

Jason Klein, the current President and CEO, will remain in his position until April 1, 2025. After that, he will return to Shell in Houston, Texas with his family. The details of his next role within Shell will be announced at a later date.

“It’s been an honour to lead LNG Canada for the past three years as we reached major construction milestones, participated in reconciliation, and steadily advanced towards delivering the first cargoes of made-in-B.C. LNG,” said Klein. “It’s an experience I’ll always cherish.”

LNG Canada: A Landmark Investment in Canada’s Energy Future

LNG Canada remains on track to ship its first cargoes of LNG by mid-2025, marking a significant milestone in the development of one of the largest private investments in Canadian history. The project is a long-life asset with a 40-year export license and an initial production capacity of 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). A proposed Phase 2 expansion aims to double that capacity to 28 mtpa, with the final investment decision for Phase 2 to be based on a range of factors, including competitiveness, affordability, future GHG emissions, and stakeholder engagement.

The LNG Canada facility, under development in Kitimat, British Columbia, is located on the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. It will feature two LNG processing units, known as “trains,” and is being built by a joint venture consisting of Shell (40%), PETRONAS (25%), PetroChina (15%), Mitsubishi Corporation (15%), and Korea Gas Corporation (5%).

The project is operated by LNG Canada Development Inc.

LNG Canada’s strategic importance to Canada’s energy future cannot be overstated, as it plays a key role in the global transition to cleaner energy, supporting the country’s economic growth while contributing to the development of sustainable LNG solutions.
